Book Description
Evil Shadows is a true story of the extremes of identity theft that can lead to arrest, prosecution and imprisonment of the victim. Evil Shadows: A Terrifying True Story of Identity Theft, Cyber Crimes, a Botched U.S. Customs Investigation and an Innocent American by Rick Hallock, and published by Barringer Publishing (April 2013) is a tale stranger than fiction.

Book Readers Review

Evil Shadows by Rick Hallock is a true and terrifying story of identity theft.  Hallock tells of his ten-year fight against US Customs and the federal government after the theft of his identity in 2000. Rick's battle against the theft of his identity went as far as the US Supreme Court.  Foremost is his uncovering and exposing undocumented methods used by the U.S. government agents to acquire personal information about the Americans.  And that they do so without any legal right to do so.  He tells of his efforts to rebuild his life that has been destroyed by the very same government sworn to protect its people.

Hallock presents his story with a chilling amount of evidence that he has acquired from various affidavits and investigative reports through The Freedom of Information Act. The evidence shows his innocence of the accused crimes.  Also the unlawful detention, abuse, seizure and destruction of computer hardware and data he used to make his living.

I found Evil Shadows a disturbing story because it is real but continued reading to the end.  The technical information Rick provides was often overwhelming and difficult to understand.  There was a fair amount of repetition of events and facts that could have been condensed to make the reading flow more.  But Rick has been up against an incredible fight for justice. His repeatedly having to ask the relevant powers to return his computer data so he could prove his innocence.  An incredible dark side of the law is seen by all the obstacles he has to overcome. Throughout the ten years of trauma, Hallock's strength of character shown.  The love and support of his family to fight together to overcome the authorities and prove his innocence adds to his strength. Perhaps there's in a similar situation would not be so blessed.  A wealth of information and resources are provided by the author in the final chapters.  Everyone should read this book.  It is an honest and emotional account and an education of Identity Theft.  Highly recommended.
I received this book free from the author in return for an honest review.

  1. When I was at BEA an author spoke of how someone took her book and republished it as his own, changing a few names and details only.

Identity theft is scary and in this world where we put so much of our personal info online, it's worse than ever.

    Thanks for highlighting this book!
