The story tells a little about mum's past. She was in love with an RAF (Royal Airforce) pilot who flew Lancasters in World War 11, believed to have taken part in the famous "Dam Busters raid". Mum's lover was shot down and killed during a raid, not sure if it was the "Dam Busters" one. But refers to this "lost love" in many of her short stories.
